Rs 500 and Rs 1000 Note Withdrawal - What to do now? - UPI

In stealth mode the Government of India has withdrawn the legal Status of Rs 500  and Rs 1000 notes.

With a view to curbing financing of terrorism through the proceeds of Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) and use of such funds for subversive activities such as espionage, smuggling of arms, drugs and other contrabands into India, and for eliminating Black Money which casts a long shadow of parallel economy on our real economy, it has been decided to cancel the legal tender character of the High Denomination bank notes of Rs.500 and Rs.1000 denominations issued by RBI till now. This will take effect from the expiry of the 8th November, 2016.

Highlights:

  • ATMs will not work on November 9, and at some places on November 10 too.
  • Banks will remain closed on 9th November.
  • Rs 20,000 weekly cap on exchange of Rs 500 & Rs 1,000 notes.
  • Cash withdrawals from ATM and other machines will be restricted to ₹ 2,000 per day.

This is what is know, but how do we the public deal with this and go about on our daily work?

UPI - Unified Payments Interface

RBI and the Government are pushing for a Cashless India and wants everyone to use digital money/transactions to avoid Black Money. This has been planned since a long time back and many policies have been put in place. These policies will now help us in the new Digital India.

The RBI launched a new Payment Method called UPI (Unified Payments Interface) a few months ago. This method makes payments and transactions EXTREMELY easy and quick. It's even faster than taking money out of your wallet!

The Government wants us to use this instead of Physical cash as it is helpful for everyone.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unified_Payments_Interface

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is a system that powers multiple bank accounts(of participating banks),several banking services features like fund transfer (P2P) ,merchant payments in single mobile application.[2] UPI was launched by National Payments Corporation of India with Reserve Bank of India's(RBI) vision of migrating towards a 'less-cash' and more digital society. Unified Payment Interface (UPI) has built on the Immediate Payment Service(IMPS) platform.

UPI platform can be used for:
  • Immediate money transfer through mobile device round the clock 24*7 and 365 days.
  • Single mobile application for accessing different bank accounts
  • Single Click 2 Factor Authentication .
  • Virtual address of the customer for Pull & Push provides for incremental security with the customer not required to enter the details such as Card no, Account number; IFSC etc.
  • Bill Sharing with friends.
  • Merchant Payment with Single Application or In-App Payments.
  • Scheduling PUSH and PULL Payments for various purposes.
  • Utility Bill Payments, Over the Counter Payments, Barcode (Scan and Pay) based payments.
  • Donations, Collections, Disbursements Scalable.
  • Raising Complaint from Mobile App directly.

How to get UPI?

  • Every major bank has their own UPI app but I recommend PhonePe as it is very good.

  • You can then set a 6 Digit number as PIN. You will only have to remember this number and nothing else!

  • Now set something called a Virtual Address, it's similar to Email address but here it looks like Ex: ajay@ybl. You can give any name you want. (This makes UPI more safe than normal net banking because you can give any random name and strangers won't know your ACTUAL bank ac details!)

  • Now all you need to do is send or receive any amount (Even 1 Rs!) using your address.

UPI has no charges or fees of any kind and is free.
Lets embrace Digital India and do our part in stopping Black Money.

How to use calling in Jio even when connected to Wifi

Unless you have a VO-LTE enabled phone, you will not be able to make or receive voice calls via the Jio4G Voice app when connected to a wifi network. This is because when you connect to your own Wifi network, the phone automatically disconnects Cellular data. Because Jio uses VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) it needs an active cellular data connection. to receive and make calls.
There is a workaround for this -
First, we will have to enable Developer Options in Android.
  1. Open Settings> About> Software Information> More.
  2. Then tap “Build number” seven times to enable Developer options. ...
  3. Go back to Settings menu and now you'll be able to see “Developer options” there.
  4. Now open the “Developer options” and scroll down until you see this:

Now enable “Cellular data always active” and your calling problems will be solved.
Just don't mess with any other setting in “Developer options” if you don't know what you are doing.
Hope this helps!

How I got my phone into Jio's Preview offer!!!

I will blog my experience with getting a Reliance Jio for my Moto X Play.

Day 1 :

01/09/2016 - Saw the announcements made at Reliance AGM by Mukesh Ambani and after careful consideration decided to get the Jio sim.

The 4G only network in place without legacy issues and the proper handling of Voice calls as free which was long overdue (To me it was inevitable and am glad that Reliance did it).

Installed the "My Jio" app from play store.
Saw that there were no Motorola phones in the "Preview Partners" list/Image of Logos.

Wrote an email to Motorola for support on this issue.
When will Moto X Play 2015 get Reliance jio 4G Preview offer? And don't give me boiler-plate answer like, "At the earliest." Give me an estimate! [---001:000925:26459---]

Confident that Motorola had my back, later that night I went through the registration for getting the SIM in "My Jio" app.

A unique code was generated (called by Reliance as "Coupon Code")

Reliance Jio Coupon Code Sample

Day 4:

I went to my nearest Reliance Digital store (Vidyaranyapura one) at 10 am and found out that they are out of SIM's and was told to come back on Thursday.

The employee was very nice and helped a bunch of us who were waiting outside the store as it was not yet opened (Opening Time is 11 AM).

I decided to go visit the Mantri Mall reliance store as I had a feeling they would be more prepared.

At around 11:20 AM I stood in line with around 8 others ahead of me and got a Token instead of a SIM.
Token given instead of SIM

I was told to come back next Sunday on the 11th and get my SIM then

I asked the employee if I could port my number to Jio, she said that it's not possible and that porting facility may be possible after
1st Jan 2017

Day 5: Day of the Launch

05/09/2016 - The Jio Preview Offer went live but I could not enjoy the benefits of 4G as a SIM was available at TWO reliance stores.

I also received a reply from Motorola the same day.

"  Dear Customer,

Thank you for contacting Motorola.

From today the Reliance Jio is partnered with Motorola and you can use the same by installing My Jio app on the device.

Make sure that the device is updated to the VOLTE patch update that was released for Moto X Play.

If you the device is not updated then please wait for the software update for the device to use VOLTE feature on the device.

After generation of code you may contact the Reliance store for the sim card.

For additional questions we are here to help. You can reach us at our toll-free number 18001022344 (Mon-Sun 10a.m to 7p.m.).

We appreciate your patience and value your business.

Regards,

Turns out they really did look into it and made it possible for my phone (Moto X Play) to be included in the Preview Offer.

I checked the "My Jio" app and indeed did notice Moto logo as one of the Partners now!

Thanks to the team at Motorola who took my email seriously and gave the customer a solution instead of excuses!

Truly, great after sales service from Motorola even though they had no obligation to fulfill my request. But still I hear from the uninformed that Moto after sales service is not good as they don't have many physical stores. This proves them wrong.
